Chase Bank has recently added an additional $50 statement credit sign up bonus on the United Airlines Mileage Plus Visa. The bonus is available to any new customer who makes a single purchase on the card.
The new sign up bonus is being offered in addition to the existing offer of 25,000 United Mileage Plus bonus air miles awarded after a single purchase, and the 5,000 bonus air miles for adding an additional user to the account. The bonus miles are enough to redeem for a round trip ticket anywhere in the Continental United States and with the additional $50 cash back, cardholders can also cover the cost of checked baggage on the flight.
In addition to this, because Continental Airlines and United Airlines are awaiting their single operating certificate from the FAA following their merger, although they are still operating as two separate airlines, air miles can easily be transferred between the United Airlines Mileage Plus program and the continental OnePass program.
In addition to the generous sign up bonuses of up to 30,000 air miles and a $50 cash back statement credit, the United Airlines Plus signature Visa card has some attractive features. There is no annual fee charged during the first year, saving cardholders $60 and there are no limits placed on the number of air miles which can be earned using the card. Air miles are earned at a rate of one per dollar spent on the card. The card has a fairly average variable APR of 14.24% on both purchases and balance transfers and is aimed primarily at consumers who have an excellent personal credit rating.
Despite the merge of the two airlines, both still issue separate credit cards and consumers may wish to opt for the Continental Airlines OnePass Plus card instead of the United Airlines Mileage Plus card. The OnePass card offers a similar APR and much the same introductory and sign up bonuses as the United Airlines Card, however the card also offers a free bag check for each passenger.
That’s a potential saving of $50 per person not offered by the United Card. In addition, the air miles are awarded at a slightly higher rate. While general purchase also earn one mile per dollar, purchases of airline tickets earn double that amount. Cardholders also have access to Continental Presidents Club lounges for two people.
While the United Airlines card may introduce free checked baggage in the future, for now the Continental Airlines card may offer better value.
