Being retired can be one of the best and one of the most relaxing times of a person life. If you are retired or thinking about retiring know that you do not have to give up your credit cards and live off cash. Here are a few easy steps to follow to keep your life happy.
Having a credit card is almost a necessity today. If you want to travel, rent a car or buy something online most of the time you need a credit card. So to ensure you do not get into debt and turn those relaxing years of retirement into stressful years of retirement remember this. The most important thing to keep in mind when you are retired and still using credit cards is to make sure you pay off the balance each month. If you carry a balance the interest rates can add up and start to make it hard to live stress free.
You will be able to pay off your credit card balance each month if you live within your means. You can do this by planning your budget and knowing what amount of money you will be able to safely charge on the credit card and be able to pay off at the end of the month. Try not to get into the habit of charging it. Sometimes we see something we want and do not have the money up front so we think – “I can charge it and pay it off later”. Sometimes a family member may need some financial help and you may be inclined to use your credit card to charge something they need. Or you may think to take out a cash advance against your credit card. By doing this you are putting yourself at risk of getting into debt and not being able to fully enjoy your retirement.
If you find that you use your credit card often you may want to consider signing up for a card that offers a rewards program. By doing this you will in a sense get paid for using the credit card. There are many retired people who are using credit cards to pay for things and they are still able to be debt free.
Just because you are retired does not mean you credit card has to be retired. Be responsible and you will enjoy retirement while having a credit card.
