The United States Treasury has this year launched a pilot program which will give low to moderate income taxpayers their income tax refund in the form of a pre-paid debit card. This scheme is targeted at people who do not have a traditional bank account. The Visa or MasterCard branded debit cards allow for tax refunds to be paid much more quickly than with a traditional paper check. It also means that taxpayers can avoid paying check cashing fees at currency exchanges if they do not have a suitable bank account. Once issued, the debit card can be used for every day transactions such as bill payments and cash withdrawals. It can also be used in the same way as any debit or credit card for making purchases. The Treasury has contacted approximately 600,000 low to moderate income taxpayers across the United States inviting them to consider activating a Tax Refund prepaid debit card in time to have their federal tax refund deposited onto it.
