MasterCard worldwide has announced that they will be providing support for relief efforts in Japan following the recent tragedy in the country.
Japan has experienced major damage and massive loss of life following an earthquake and tsunami. The credit card company has said that they will be waiving interchange fees on donations made using MasterCard branded cards.
MasterCard will not be charging interchange fees on donations made to the following organizations: American Red Cross, AmeriCare, Doctors Without Borders, Save the Children, World Vision, and International Rescue Committee.
In addition to waiving interchange fees, MasterCard also plans to donate all revenue which is generated by donations made to these organizations up until May 15, 2011. There will also be a corporate donation to the Japanese relief efforts of $250,000 which will be distributed among the disaster relief funds of the listed charities.
The company has also informed their employees that they will be double matching all contributions made by staff members. In addition to the charities listed, interchange fees will also be waived for donations to Canada Helps and Canadian Red Cross which are made using Canadian issued MasterCards.
MasterCard says that consumers must make sure that when donating to their chosen charitable organization, that the money is being directed specifically towards the Japanese Earthquake Relief. If you are concerned about exactly how your donation is to be used, you should also research what the charitable organization plans to do for Japan.
Some of the organizations are focusing on short term aid required immediately such as medical treatment, search and rescue efforts, and food, while others are looking at long term projects to help rebuild and replace what has been lost in coming years.
If you have a personal preference in regard to what your donation is used for then this will play a major role in deciding which charity you wish to donate to using your MasterCard.
