The H&R Block Emerald Prepaid MasterCard allows individuals to load tax refunds or loan proceeds directly onto it when they get their taxes prepared at an H&R Block tax office. The card can then be used just like a regular debit or credit card anywhere that accepts Debit MasterCard.
MasterCard is a worldwide credit network accepted at over 24 million outlets across the globe. Having your tax refund loaded onto a prepaid debit card of this type allows individuals to save money by avoiding expensive fees involved in check cashing. The card is only available through tax professionals.
There are no interest charges involved because this is a prepaid card, not a credit card. The purchases you make are deducted from the balance of your card immediately. As you have already deposited money into the account, you are not borrowing money and cannot be charged interest.
However, the card functions just like a debit or credit card. It can be used at a range of places including gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, airlines, and even for shopping online with a number of internet merchants.
One of the cards benefits is that it can offer individuals enhanced security. This type of card carries no risk of getting into financial difficulty as it is only possible to spend as much as is deposited into the account.
There is no option to borrow extra to be paid back later. It is also much safer than carrying cash. Since the card is a MasterCard branded card, it is also covered by the US MasterCard Zero Liability policy which protects the cardholder against unauthorized purchases if the card is ever lost or stolen.
The card allows account holders to get cash back when they shop with it, effectively allowing them to withdraw cash from the card without having to make a trip to the ATM. You would simply ask the cashier if they offer cash back before completing the transaction.
For example if you wanted $20, the cashier would add $20 to the cost of your purchases and give you a $20 bill. You can also withdraw money from ATMs across the country, although some machines will charge a small withdrawal fee. To avoid this you can get a list of free ATMs from the card issuer.
It is fairly easy to top up the card with additional funds. It is also possible to have your employer load payroll directly onto the card which allows you same day access to the money on payday. There are also many approved "Reload networks" to be found in participating retail outlets nationwide.
